May 2022 - Weeding duties....

Weeding in May

A spot of weeding on Sunday May 1st has removed all the chickweed - awful sticky stuff - nasty stinging nettles....always at their worst when young and green and dandelions and thistles are mostly gone....for the moment!!

Borage is the most obvious plant at the moment - loved by bees and butterflies and with edible flowers. Others coming through are cornflowers (they really need a good bit of rain to bring them on...) along with speedwell, poppies, mallows and more. This is the first year so not all the ground is covered at the moment but in another year when they have all self seeded it will be twice as good ... gardens are a wait and see process much of the time...

The local Beaver Group are assisting with care and weeding as well so thanks to all who came and helped.

We are planning on purchasing some shrubs and a few bedding plants to go in around the bench and later in the year bulbs for spring colour.

Future ideas are raised beds around the Platinum Jubilee Bench when installed - the current bench will be relocated to a green space in the village - a central bird table and ideally a water butt and compost bin....we just have to find the money - fund raising is being considered.

All in all it is looking pretty good - and a huge improvement on the bramble and thistle patch it was....
