Wainfleet St Mary Parish Winter Newsletter

It’s been a busy few months for Wainfleet St Mary – including a worrying weekend when Storm Babet unleashed herself. Having experienced the devastation of the floods in 2019 it has to be uppermost in everyone’s mind as to the possibility of it happening again.

Since then, all the Emergency Agencies and the Councils including WASTC and WSM have put together an Emergency Plan to action should the unthinkable happen again. Whilst this cannot stop the weather it can help to reassure everyone that help, and support is at hand – contact numbers are available on our web site – and we have Facebook pages where we will post information as we get it...

On a happier note...

The Village Show, the Coronation, the monthly Lunch Club, and the car boots (when the sun shone, and the weather allowed us to run it....) have kept us busy – as has the further development of the Jubilee Orchard with planting and geo-caching set to make an appearance in Wainfleet St Mary.

The Village Show was a good day out and the competitions well supported – congratulations to all the winners – thank you for contributing. 2024 is in the planning – and the 2024 calendar compiled from winning photos – and judges’ favourites is ready to purchase - £6.00 per copy with funds raised going towards the next Show in September – just give the clerk a call or message our FB page to order your copy.

Rocking Around Wainfleet goes from strength to strength and the latest Spooktastic competition was won by Leon and Alexander.

Some stunning rocks were hidden....and found.

Follow their Facebook page for all their news.

In the planning is .......

Tea with Santa -  Arranged for Sunday December 3rd followed by the light switch on.....

The 2024 Village Show date for your diary is Sunday September 1st.

We are already planning for the show, and we are aiming to have a bigger “Make it, Grow it and Show it” schedule for you to enter as well as further stalls, competitions and entertainment. The show needs to be self-sustainable so fund raising throughout the year will take place.  We are a fun team to work with and if you would like to be involved, please contact Maureen or Jan

A bespoke Village sign for Wainfleet St Mary is our next aim but fund raising is required....Watch out for further info on our Facebook pages – WSM Council and Community Hall Events.

Let us know your thoughts on this...is it a good idea?

The Funding Buddies Group (as they are known) - These are the 3 people who look for grant funding and then set about applying for it.

They have successfully bid for funding for the first Village Show, The Lunch Club and the landscaping of the Jubilee Orchard and worked with commercial organisations such as National Grid and LCC raising funds.

Current applications in progress are to develop the green area where the glass bins were just outside the Queens estate as well as one for the 80th D Day Celebrations – a beacon and a day of family fun is the aim if the funding is approved – keep your fingers crossed!!

Two new Councillors - have joined us this year following the sad loss of Cllr R Picker and the retirement of long-standing Councillor Sue Simpson – Sue was instrumental in the purchase of the Community Hall which is such an asset and allows the Council to put on events like The Village Show and Beacon. Thank you Sue. Also created was Abbotts Wood which has been named in dedication to long serving Cllr Ron Abbott whom we lost last year – this is the wood alongside St Mary’s Church – and is a beautiful peaceful place to visit – which Ron did and cared for during his lifetime.

Remembrance Weekend.

For the first time there was a remembrance service on November 11th at the beautiful St Mary’s Church to remember the fallen – A big vote of thanks to Chair Cllr Mick Rust for arranging

And a huge thank you to the ladies who have produced the “additions” to the bus shelter and seats in St Mary’s. they just make everyone smile.

.Winter is a less than enjoyable time of year but here’s looking forward to the warmer and more cheerful weather.

Happy Christmas to everyone and roll on Spring 2024.
