Latest Update from the Environment Agency on Saltfleet to Gibralter Point beach management
March 2021
Saltfleet to Gibraltar Point Beach Management 2021
Background
Working together with the Environment Agency,
Van Oord will be delivering the first phase of the
Saltfleet to Gibraltar Point Beach Management
2021 – 2024.
Replacing the sand that is lost during the winter
each year reduces the risk of waves reaching and
overtopping the main sea defences. The sand
protects the sea wall from damage and erosion
so it can continue to protect 20,000 homes and
businesses, 24,500 static caravans and 35,000
hectares of land from coastal flooding.
Coronavirus
Coronavirus is causing concern across the
country for everyone, both personally and
professionally. Our key priorities are to protect
the health, safety and well-being of our staff, the
public and the businesses and partners we work
with. Mobilisation and site set up will start in
March and will following the government and
construction sector guidelines. with
What are we doing and where?
This year beaches will be nourished at
Ingoldmells, Trunch Lane, Wolla Bank, Chapel
Six Marshes, Boygrift, Trusthorpe and Huttoft.
We are currently mobilising to the beach and will
be undertaking preparation works ahead of the
dredging starting mid-April. The works are due
to be completed by the summer holidays, but the
programme will be subject to change should
further Coronavirus restrictions coming into
force.
As in previous years, The dredger HAM316 will
transport the sand from offshore sites and pump it
onto the beach at high tide through a 630m long
pipeline. We will then push the sand into the
required beach profile using bulldozers and
excavators.
Public access
For safety reasons, sections of beach will be
cordoned off from public access during the works.
We would like to ask you to remain vigilant and
keep away from the works. Please adhere to the
social distancing measures of 2m if you are
required to approach or speak to our workers.
Improving the image of construction
The Considerate Constructors Scheme was set up
to improve the image of the construction industry.
The scheme aims to encourage best practice
beyond statutory requirements and show the
industry to be considerate. We are doing everything
possible to apply the scheme’s code:
• caring about the appearance of our site
• respecting the community
• protecting the environment
• securing everyone’s safety
• value our workforce

Road Closure
In advance of the beach nourishment works,
during the quiet period before the Easter
Holidays we will need to restrict the beach
access in the area of Huttoft Car Terrace for
vehicles and pedestrians. This is to enable a
safe mobilisation operation as we move our very
large construction vehicles and equipment to the
beach.
The road will be closed from the access at
Roman Bank to our compound at the South end
of Huttoft Car Terrace (see map below) from
7.00am Monday 22 March to 7.00pm Friday 26
March 2021. A traffic management contractor
has been appointed to manage the road closure
and advance warning signs will be in place. Our
working hours will be 7.00am to 7.00pm.
